Unit 1 

Before you read

a. What are critical thinking skills?

b. How do critical thinkers solves the problems? Guess the steps they follow while tackling a problem.

Read the following text and do the given tasks.

There was a lot of shuffling around when the bell rang and everybody got up to leave. I checked my schedule and it said my next class was English, room 321. I didn’t stop to see if anyone else from my homeroom was going my way: I just zoomed out of the class and down the hall and sat down as far from the front as possible. The teacher, are ally tall man with a yellow beard, was writing on the chalkboard.

Kids came in laughing and talking in little groups but I didn’t look up. Basically, the same thing that happened in homeroom happened again: no one sat next to me except for Jack, who was joking around with some kids who weren’t in our homeroom. I could tell Jack was the kind of kid other kids like. He had a lot of friends. He made people laugh.

When the second bell rang, everyone got quiet and the teacher turned around and facedus. He said his name was Mr. Browne, and then he started talking about what we would be doing this semester. At a certain point, somewhere between A Wrinkle in Time and Shen of the Sea, he noticed me but kept right on talking.

I was mostly doodling in my notebook while he talked, but every once in a while I would sneak a look at the other students. Charlotte was in this class. So were Julian and Henry. Miles wasn’t.

Mr. Browne had written on the chalkboard in big block letters:

P-R-E-C-E-P-T!

“Okay, everybody write this down  us to do, he said: “Okay, so who can tell me what a precept is? Does anyone know?” No one raised their hands. Mr. Browne smiled, nodded, and turned around to write on the chalk board again:

PRECEPTS = RULES ABOUT REALLY IMPORTANT THINGS!

“Like a motto?” someone called out.

“Like a motto!” said Mr. Browne, nodding as he continued writing on the board. “Like a famous quote. Like a line from a fortune cookie. Any saying or ground rule that can motivate you. Basically, a precept is anything that helps guide us when making decisions about really important things.” He wrote all that on the chalkboard and then turned around and faced us. “So, what are some really important things?” he asked us. A few kids raised their hands, and as he pointed at them, they gave their answers, which he wrote on the chalkboard in really, really sloppy handwriting:

RULES. SCHOOLWORK. HOMEWORK.

“What else?” he said as he wrote, not even turning around. “Just call things out!” He wrote everything everyone called out.

FAMILY. PARENTS. PETS.

One girl called out: “The environment!”

THE ENVIRONMENT

.He wrote on the chalkboard, and added:

OUR WORLD!

“Sharks, because they eat dead things in the ocean!” said one of the boys, a kid named Reid, and Mr. Browne wrote down

SHARKS.

“Bees!” “Seatbelts!” “Recycling!” “Friends!”

“Okay,” said Mr. Browne, writing all those things down. He turned around when he finished writing to face us again. “But no one’s named the most important thing of all.” We all looked at him, out of ideas.“ God?” said one kid, and I could tell that even though Mr. Browne wrote “God” down, that wasn’t the answer he was looking for. Without saying anything else, he wrote down:

WHO WE ARE!

“Who we are,” he said, underlining each word as he said it. “Who we are! Us! Right? What kind of people are we? What kind of person are you? Isn’t that the most important thing of all? Isn’t that the kind of question we should be asking ourselves all the time?“ What kind of person am I?“ Did anyone happen to notice the plaque next to the door of this school? Anyone read what it says? Anyone? ”He looked around but no one knew the answer.“ It says: ‘Know Thyself,’ ” he said, smiling and nodding. “And learning who you are is what you’re here to do.” “I thought we were here to learn English,” Jack cracked, which made everyone laugh. “Oh yeah, and that, too!” Mr. Browne answered, which I thought was very cool of him.He turned around and wrote in big huge block letters that spread all the way across the chalkboard:

MR. BROWNE’S SEPTEMBER PRECEPT:WHEN GIVEN THE CHOICE BETWEEN BEINGRIGHT OR BEING KIND, CHOOSE KIND.

“Okay, so, everybody,” he said, facing us again, “I want you to start a brand-new section in your notebooks and call it Mr. Browne’s Precepts. ”He kept talking as we did what he was telling us to do.“ Put today’s date at the top of the first page. And from now on, at the beginning of every month, I’m going to write a new Mr. Browne precept on the chalkboard and you’re going to write it down in your notebook. Then we’re going to discuss that precept and what it means. And at the end of the month, you’re going to write an essay about it, about what it means to you. So by the end of the year, you’ll all have your own list of precepts to take away with you. “Over the summer, I ask all my students to come up with their very own personal precept, write it on a postcard, and mail it to me from wherever you go on your summer vacation.” “People really do that?” said one girl whose name I didn’t know. “Oh yeah!” he answered, “people really do that. I’ve had students send me new precepts years after they’ve graduated from this school, actually. It’s pretty amazing.” He paused and stroked his beard. “But, anyway, next summer seems like a long way off, I know,” he joked, which made us laugh. “So, everybody relax a bit while I take attendance, and then when we ’refinished  with that, I’ll start telling you about all the fun stuff we’re going to be doing this year—in English.” He pointed to Jack when he said this, which was also funny, so we all laughed at that. As I wrote down Mr. Browne’s September precept, I suddenly realized that I was going to like school. No matter what

Working with words

A. Find the words from the text that match with the following meanings.

a. Shuffling walking by dragging one’s feet along or without lifting them fully from the ground

b. Doodling drawing pictures or patterns while thinking about something else

c. Plaque a piece of flat metal with writing on it

d. Percept a general rule intended to regulate behaviour or thought

e. Sneak move or go in a furtive or stealthy way

B. Consult your teacher and define the following thinking skills.

a. convergent thinking : 

Convergent thinking is the way of approaching the solution of certain problems by narrowing the basic concepts. This type of thinking is based on knowledge, comprehension, and logical reasoning. A variety of tests, such as multiple-choice tests, quizzes, spelling tests require convergent thinking.

 b. divergent thinking :

Divergent thinking also known as lateral thinking is a thought process of generating numerous creative ideas by exploring possible solutions. Divergent thinking is a spontaneous process such that many ideas are generated in an emergent cognitive fashion. Showing a person a photo and asking them to create a caption for the photo is an example of divergent thinking.

c. critical thinking :

 Critical thinking is a mode of thinking that primarily focuses on actively analysing, conceptualizing, evaluating the gathered information. It is reasonable and skilful thinking that converges on deciding what and how to solve a problem. 

 d. creative thinking : 

Creative thinking indicates thinking outside the box. It includes brainstorming a problem and trying to figure it out in a distinct way. Creative thinking refers to using intelligence to come up with new solutions to problems.

Comprehension

Answer the following questions.

a. Who was Jack? How did he make children laugh?

Jack is a boy who sits beside the speaker. He was a humorous kid who had lots of friends rambling with him. He used to joke and make children laugh.

b. Why are “Sharks” important to Reid?

Sharks were important to Reid as they eat dead things in the ocean.

c. What does Mr. Browne think about the most important thing?

Mr Browne thinks that the person who we are is the most important thing. According to him ‘Know Thyself’ is a significant thing for every one of us.

d. What is that has not been noticed by the student?

The plaque next to the door of this school which says ‘Know Thyself’ has not been noticed by the student.

e. How did Jack make fun of the English class?

Jack made the children laugh by cracking the joke by stating “I thought we are here to learn English” while Mr Browne was telling the students that they were in class to find who they are.

f. What were the students going to do at the end of the month?

Students were going to write personal percept on the postcard wherever they travel and mail it to Mr Browne at the end of the month.

g. What particular act of students surprised a girl student?

The girl was surprised when she found out that people write a personal percept and share it.

Critical thinking

a. Have you made your own precept after you read this lesson? What is it? Share it with your friends.

“Small changes sum to huge result”

Start thinking about what you might want to change about yourself or your life. Sometimes we make personal changes for ourselves, and sometimes we feel pressured to make changes for other people. Think about why you want to change. Is it for you, or for someone else?

Changes in my sense are building habits that help to enhance our daily lifestyle. If a person hardly exercises then a sudden stroke of doing 100 pushups won’t help him outreach the goal of getting fit. It’s pretty sure that he will quit his pushup habits soon. Rather if he does 5 pushups on the first day and gradually increases the number he might find a great change in himself. Doing small changes every day on ourselves builds automation in our tasks. It’s more like psychological affect. The human mind always tries to sneak for an easy solution for every problem. So starting any task immediately is difficult for the human mind and it will not last long. Setting a goal of reading 100 pages of a book every day isn’t good practice if you are a newbie in reading books. You might complete your task on the first day but eventually, your mind finds out it’s quite difficult to retain this habit. So you will quit. Small changes made every day pile up to create good habits. While climbing the stair we don’t directly jump from the first step to the fourth step, do we? We go step by step, don’t we? Being consistent is the key and to obtain it we need to pile up small steps every day.

 

 

b. According to Josh Lanyon, “If there was one life skill everyone on the planet needed, it was the ability to think with critical objectivity.” Justify this statement with your logic.

Critical thinking is a mode of thinking that primarily focuses on actively analysing, conceptualizing, evaluating the gathered information. It is reasonable and skilful thinking that converges on deciding what and how to solve a problem.

According to Josh Lanyon statement, critical thinking is the most essential thing that people wants. Critical thinking helps to look at things from various or different perspectives. It includes purpose, assumption, concepts, empirical grounding, reasoning leading to conclusions, implications and consequences, Basically everything that comes to our mind while solving a problem.

Every day we think critically to do any task. As a student, there are lots of homework assignments, school projects to do in our free time. In this free time, we need to think critically about when to do assignments when to submit school projects this all needs our critical objectivity and thoughts. To make any decisions we need to think practically and critically. If we are not thinking critically then on which basis are we going to make a decision? We need to either make decisions in prejudice and bias way, assumptions, personal preference or we are left with no decisions at all.

All mankind will definitely find a problem in their life, to tackle it we need to think critically and it is a spontaneous process. Justice would not be made if people stop thinking critically. However, the ability to think critically is not inherent but has to be developed. The school system should encourage that critical thinking than just facts memorizing.

Writing

Write an email to your friend explaining an interesting class you had.

Dear Ram,

I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am absolutely fine here. I am having online classes these days, and I was a bit free as well. So I thought I would write something to you.

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, our traditional learning has been shifted to the online form where our school has managed to create a digital platform for students and teachers where we are engaged by asking questions playing quizzes and a lot more fun activities.

It’s our pleasure that our school has even introduced public speaking classes, where every week young entrepreneurs, speakers come to our class and share their experiences, ups and downs in their life and also teach us some life lessons. In the previous week, one of the co-founders of Infosys came into our class who exposed us to the universe of machines, robotics and IT. I had no clue how prominent was IT before that class. In that I class I learnt much about startup, entrepreneurship, business strategy, team management which was the most astonishing class I ever took.

We have somehow formed a group to do some projects related to technology. I would love to teach you about the same. Waiting for your experience. Keep posting me.
